My electrician friend recently asked me to fetch a GFCI outlet. And though I wish I could report that I casually tossed the ground-fault circuit interrupter his way, my response was more along the lines of, “Huh?”

We all have those moments with professionals who use terms they think we already know. But, short of asking them to speak to us like children or ducking out to consult a smartphone every few minutes, we can arm ourselves with a bit of knowledge. Here are 10 common kitchen remodeling terms that the pros think you should know.

A GFCI will detect the amount of current passing from hot to neutral. and whether there is any irregularity, in which case it trips the circuit thereby cutting of the current. An irregularity could be that part of the current is flowing elsewhere, say through a person. A standard GFCI can read a disparity as little as 4 milliamps, and react as quickly as 25msec.
