Far into the Future

2 of 6

Our society loves dreaming of the future, and while Disney's 1957 portrayal of future kitchens did not come true, designers and kitchen companies today are pushing the envelope more than ever. So what does the future hold for kitchen design? Ikea recently designed a kitchen concept for the year 2040 with self-cleaning counters and 3-D holistic displays, plus super energy-saving benefits. Eletrolux designed a 2099 concept kitchen, which, based on the principle of metamorphosis, lets homeowners shape a kitchen as they see fit. Capabilities such as a water splitting machine turns the end product of burning gas into clean water. While this may seem like details straight out of a sci-fi movie, the future is closer than we think. Companies are constantly exploring new ways to save water, energy, and keep items out of the waste stream. Many innovative designs are coming out of Europe and are already on the market there. Here’s a look at a few futuristic concepts available today.
