I would definetly add in more wood accent to add warmth. The ceiling beams, the base of the island and even make a counter wood. Boom the kitchen that is white would be warm too!
Keeping the counters dark, regardless of the material, would keep the counters clean looking for years to come and add to the contrast of the room.

I have a beautiful white cabinets and they are badly in need of painting. I have decided to paint them white again, after long consideration of a "color". Counter tops are black granite.
