Glass, ceramic, stainless, you name it. Backsplashes are “the” kitchen statement piece these days and it seems the options and price points on the market offer something for every taste and budget.

The backsplash is a great candidate for emphasis in a kitchen and it doesn’t always have to be colorful –there are some stunning neutral colors that give just as much impact. However if you do opt for a bright backsplash, most designers agree it should be the only colorful element in the room so as not to overwhelm and create too much “noise” in the space. And, be mindful of tying the backsplash in with your countertops. For instance, an intricate, detailed or multi-colored backsplash will look best with a simple, monochromatic counter color, such as Cambria’s White Cliff or Oakhampton.

For a clean, seamless, look, consider continuing the countertop material vertically as a backsplash. Wraparound countertops and a high backsplash in Cambria’s Canterbury (above photo) create a strong, visual counterweight to the kitchen’s darker oak cabinetry. To add to the dramatic effect, all task lighting, outlets and switches were mounted underneath the top cabinets, keeping the backsplash’s surface free from unsightly plugs or switch plates.

If you do go the tile route, don’t neglect the grout. Basic white grout is a common choice in many homes, but adding a little tint can do wonders in helping prevent dirt, grime, mold and mildew from showing. Kitchen backsplashes often look best when the grout color is just a tone lighter than the tile. Or, for a hit of drama, choose a dark grout color to compliment a light-colored tile. Most importantly, whether you’re doing your own tiling or hiring a professional, remember to seal the grout when the project is complete to keep moisture and stains at bay, and keep up with that sealing as often as recommended. Should you choose Cambria quartz for your backsplash, sealing is not necessary since the product is naturally nonporous and cleans up easily with soap and water.

Funky and colorful or elegant and smooth, the possibilities for backsplashes are only limited by your imagination!
