Upgrade Your Lighting

2 of 7

Lighting is like jewelry for the home. It’s also a dead giveaway to when your house was built or last remodeled. Fluorescent light boxes or commercial-style fluorescent fixtures say “old,” so hire a contractor to replace them with recessed lighting. This will subtract years from the look of your kitchen, brighten the space and even raise your ceiling by several inches. Upgrade task lighting by installing pendants over peninsulas, islands, and sinks. There are many relatively inexpensive options at your local home improvement store, kitchen design store, or hardware store.

To clarify - where did the lights come from in picture 2?

I love the lights and star shaped bulbs in this photo. Where can I find them??

@ cureton - the article really outlines the different steps. My recommendation is for you and your wife to assess your kitchen and make a list of things that need upgrading and prioritize them in order of need or importance. Then decide how much you can put towards your upgrades, whether initially or what you can set aside on a monthly basis. Some fixes can be done inexpensively while others may require you to save up. For example, if you cabinets are in good shape, painting them will be give it an instant facelift. Add some new hardware from your local home improvement store or if you have IKEA near you, there are lots of inexpensive options there. Just those two things alone will make a big difference. There are inexpensive pre-fab slab countertops available and for appliances, stay tuned for long weekend holiday sales or check out the outlets in your area. They usually carry items that have minor dings that does not change the functionality of the unit, but they can't sell it for full price. Good luck and have fun!

My wife and I are thinking about upgrading our kitchen. We would like to do it a step at a time. We recently retired and on a fix income. Any suggestions on how to fet started

So calm and relaxing. Can you tell me what the back splash is and the color.

Want to know the name and manufacturer of the cabunets in picture 4 above.

where did the lights in the first picture come from??? I love them!
