We bought an older rancher home and the kitchen and bath needs updating. We bought the home because it s a larger home on five acres and has the workshop my husband wanted. Iwant my kitchen updated, but really don't know where to start. The kitchen connects to a formal dining room and a den with dark panelling, which I hate.
Whether you consider yourself to be an all-out gourmet or just a once-in-a-while cook, a wall oven may have a lot to offer your home's kitchen. For starters, there’s the design flexibility a wall oven provides, allowing you to include as many units as you need in your kitchen design. They can also be a practical addition in a kitchen that also includes a range, especially if you entertain frequently or if there are two home chefs that like to cook simultaneously. What’s more, a wall oven is a smart choice from an ergonomic standpoint; there’s no need to bend down, straining your back to lift a heavy casserole or roast. “A big advantage of a wall oven is that everything's at eye level,” says designer Sharon Sherman, CKD.
Before we even went shopping for general ideas, I wrote a comparative of what I really liked about my current kitchen, and what I didn't like or need . I also wrote a list of things I would like to have in the new kitchen. My husband and I took measurements and photos of the entire kitchen, took painter's tape and marked off areas where we were hoping to make changes, to be sure that the traffic pattern would work for us. We drew a rough draft of where windows and doors were located. We took all this with us when we went shopping. We knew what our budget would allow, and since we were remodeling an older kitchen, we knew our project would require an electrician and a plumber. Be prepared for a few unexpected surprises...(We had to replace and replaster the ceiling due to an old water leak we didn't know about.)Don't exceed your budget with tempting gizmos and gadgets that are offered by today's cabinet makers (They can eat up your budget quickly.) Shop around, get estimates, and ask friends and neighbors for recommendations for reliable professionals to do the things that you will not be able to do on your own. Find out about the local requirements for permitting, and what services need to be done by professionals in order to comply with local zoning ordinances. As for the dark paneling, ask at a home improvement store, paneling can be sealed and painted with good results. Good Luck!
Also, the cabinets are faced with panelling that are painted white and the appliances, especially the wall ovens are really old and don't heat properly.
