Hi ED, I want to build an accessible home in the next few months . I am looking for any and all tips as I am a new wheeler. I love to cook , want an island and would love it if you could share your wisdom.
I am building an accessible and sustainable home for my disabled son and I. The kitchen will have two electric cabinets that go up and down for easy access, 9" kick plates, a tiered island with a sink and dishwasher drawer, a cooktop that goes up and down 6", and a convection/microwave oven in his reach. I am curious about countertop recommendations. We bake pies together and would love a section of marble, but don't know what other surfaces to used. We are interested in sustainable materials but that is only one consideration. I am trying to read about the pros and cons of the different materials but find it a bit overwhelming. Budget is an issue as we have spent too much on this house already. But, obviously, we want what works for us. The center peninsula is ten feet wide and about 5 feet across. The counter by the stove is about ten feet long also but is broken up by the cook top, stove and refrigerator. There is enough room between countertops for a wheelchair to turn around also. The floors are concrete. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
