If you’re contemplating anything more than a simple cosmetic update for your existing kitchen, chances are good you’ll need construction drawings (commonly called blueprints). “It depends on the size and scope of your project,” says certified remodeler Jim Kabel of Case Design/Remodeling, but “there are three reasons to have them done: first, the building authority may require them; second, to show you what the physical layout will look like [when the work is done]; and, third, to make sure everyone—all of the subcontractors—knows what to build and the exact dimensions of everything.” In fact, certified remodeler Chuck Weidenbach says that in some cases, “you are required to have an architect’s drawing, a subcontractor’s drawing, and a homeowner’s drawing.
