You may remember swimmer Natalie Coughlin as the winner of five medals at 2004 in Athens, and six more in Beijing in 2008. But you probably don’t know that she’s also an all-star in the kitchen. Instead of a pool, Natalie and her husband have filled their backyard with free-ranging chickens and an organic garden.

When she’s not eating her homegrown bounty, she’s perusing farmers’ markets for organic produce to prepare in her Lafayette, California, kitchen, which she describes as clean, contemporary, and uncluttered. Natalie recently took time out of her rigorous training to give us the inside scoop five kitchen goods she says she can't live without. Plus, enter to win one of the products listed below. Details at the end!

#1. Sharp Shooter

Like all good cooks, Natalie knows the value of a quality knife. “Before I got married, I had several knives,” she says, “but my husband upped my collection when he gave me a Shun chef’s knife engraved with our wedding date. A good knife makes everything easier.”

#2. Daily Grind

A mortar and pestle make it easy for Natalie to elevate meals with seasonings straight from her garden. “There’s nothing like grinding your own herbs fresh from your backyard.”

#3. Egg-stra Special

Natalie keeps fresh eggs that her chickens provide in a ceramic egg tray—but, she says, “you don’t have to have free-range eggs to display them like this. It looks prettier than a cardboard container, and you’re more inspired to use the eggs.”

#4. Get Juiced

As an athlete, Natalie needs healthy drinks to fuel her intense workouts, so her Vitamix blender is a constant companion. “It’s the most expensive blender—but worth every penny. I use it every day to make almond milk, carrot juice, and my homegrown kale-spinach-coconut water concoctions.”

#5. International Flavor

Natalie keeps her kitchen fresh with souvenirs from her travels: “I try to get little things from each country I visit. I have ramekins from Japan that I use for my mise en place; finishing salts from France; wooden salt crocks from France, Italy, Bali and Fiji; and glass bottles from France that I use for vinaigrettes.”

Thank you for sharing!! I love my Shun knives!! They are my favorite!!

My steamer!1 It helps me keep the nutrition in the vegetables that i cook from my garden

My favorite product for healthy cooking is a mix between my Vitamix and my pressure cooker because in my pressure cooker I cook a few lbs of different vegetables in spices and then transfer that to my vitamix where I turn it into a soup that I can eat for days. Full of fiber and nutrients and a quick super healthy meal.

My new favorite item is my mini-colander, which is red at Williams-Sonoma. It hangs on a small magnetic hook on side of fridge and makes it easy to wash fruits and veggies. It then sits easily in dish drainer to drip some before adding to cereal or salads or cooking dishes. But, I am in love with my first ever Calphalon pan purchased at Williams-Sonoma recently. And my panini press. And my Magimix food processor....

A VitaMix is definitely my healthy food companion. I also make lots of smoothies to get extra fruits and veggies packed into my daily diet.

My favorite item in my kithchen is my oil mister. I get to choose the oil I want to use and it sprays pure oil without all that filler that canned products have.

I love my chef'n veggie chop. Easy to use and easy to clean up. It is the best tool to make a great salsa!

The Vitamix blender, I'm need of new blender to make more smoothies for the family.

I use a mister for oils to spray my own special oils on salads or when cooking.

William- Sonoma Olive Wood Salt keeper looks really pretty. Maybe I will get another set for pepper and other spices.

My favorite product is the moderately priced, Williams-Sonoma Olive Wood Salt Keeper.
Unique and utilitarian, it enhances savory flavorings with its Old World elegance and artisan charm that piques the senses. It will hlep me "Cultivate" more healthy cooking!
