Interior designer Amanda Nisbet is best known for energizing traditional style with bold color pairings and a touch of glam—all of which is on drool-worthy display in her new book Dazzling Design (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), which hit bookstore shelves on September 15.
And "dazzling" is a word that comes immediately to mind in the New York City-based designer's own kitchen, where she paired a gold-leafed glass tile backsplash with white cabinetry and walls. “Not everything can be the star—some elements need to make up the supporting cast," Amanda explains. "To add a little dazzle to a kitchen—or any room, really—choose one star and let everything else be a backup.”

Although she shies away from following a strict design formula, Amanda’s general guideline is to first create a truly functional and comfortable space, then add in aesthetic touches. For instance, she says, “I love to order in and I use my kitchen as more of a hangout. So I’ve put a lot of time and energy into creating a warm and welcoming banquette where people will linger.” Hers, by the way, is upholstered in leather, which, she says, is easy to clean and “just gets better and better with time.”

For homeowners looking for a quick fix that will make a lasting impact, Amanda recommends installing new light fixtures. “People overlook the power of great lighting in a kitchen,” she says. “Statement pieces make the space so much more welcoming, and can be easily changed out every five years or so when you tire of them.” From paint colors to coffeemakers, here are some of Amanda’s favorite statement-makers:
#1: A soothing paint color

“This color combo is perfect for any kitchen, as it creates a fresh and soothing atmosphere," says Amanda. "I typically use a high-gloss finish on both for a more modern look.”

“These David Sutherland custom chairs have a fresh and contemporary look—I used the white finish with an aluminum back and upholstered it with a blue vinyl cushion for a recent project.”

“It has an industrial and modern feel," Amanda says of this antique fixture salvaged from an old factory, "yet it's gentle on your eyes, thanks to the pale color.”

“Talk about dazzle," Amanda says of La Cornue's legendary ranges. "They’ve taken something utilitarian and made it glamorous.”

"The trays are great for entertaining," says Amanda. "They make a cozy night at home—curled up in front of the TV and eating takeout—feel more exciting. As for the wine rack, I love the simple, clean design—you can’t beat white glossy lacquer at a great price.”

“I am addicted to coffee!" Amanda says. "This sleek design comes in fun colors like lime and makes these fab little cups of espresso. Choose your strength (I go for 10 out of 10), and bam! A fresh shot every time.”
