For this project, the owners chose to completely rethink the small, dark rooms and isolated kitchen of a 1,200 sq. ft. Oakland bungalow. The clients' criteria for an open space where they could cook and entertain led to an island layout, blending Calacatta marble countertops and warm, white-washed oak cabinet and flooring surfaces for a subdued blend of luxury and warmth. After a solid investment in marble, the clients were able to economize elsewhere by sourcing just enough seconds inventory of Heath Ceramics 'crease' tile to cover the entire backsplash. The integrated bar area lends to casual entertaining with a beverage refridgerator and open shelving for glassware. Cabinetry and paneling along the side wall consists of white-washed red oak solid and veneer surfaces, while the flooring consists of french white oak with a white-wash finish. A Thermador appliance suite rounds out the quality of this inviting space.
