This kitchen was a bit of challenge in that it is a galley-style with double windows on one end, a doorway into the dining room on the opposite end, and doorways into adjacent rooms on the other two walls. Before the homeowner purchased the home she asked me if we could make it functional--as it had no dishwasher, no microwave, and very little cabinetry. I was able to create a plan that brought about a lot more storage, more counter-space, all of today's necessities, AND charm. One of the ways to achive this was by taking the upper cabinets to the ceiling so that no storage space was lost. I also designed a window seat (with storage inside) under the double windows with floor to ceiling cabinets on either side. These two flanking cabinets have glass in the upper doors so that the owner can have storage for china or serving dishes, as well as asthetically keeping the charm of a small bungalow. Painting the cabinets Shoji White along with the trim and walls in the same color make the room feel larger, but also warm and inviting. The New Venetian Gold granite countertops and the medium-toned wood floors further defined the warmth and feeling we were seeking. This project was a prime example that small kitchens can be charming AND functional.
