This kitchen originally had 6 ft ceilings, an un-proportionally large island and it was very dark. It lacked cabinet space and work surfaces. The client, an avid cook, wanted something airy and bright, while still respecting the nature of this 1795 farm cottage. We began by defining the style and discussing the elements and needs the client enjoyed and wanted. In this case we kept the original wide board pine floor, but because of its bad condition had it resurfaced and painted. The ceiling was raised to become cathedral style , two skylights were added and antique, structural beams were installed in keeping with the house's feeling. We also installed a door to the patio for easy access to summer entertaining, added a window where we moved the sink underneath, so one can do prep work and enjoy the stunning views of the garden. This gave the kitchen the light, crisp feeling the client was looking for. The client picked cabinetry in a white country style. We found antique brass pulls and new knobs to match. Because of budget limitation and weight constrictions - this kitchen is above an office - marble counter tops were out of the question. Instead the couple picked a 1 1/2" oak butcher block. We also created a lovely seating nook - we have been told it is used much and often. This was a fantastic project to work on, with all the challenges unique to working with an old house. It was very gratifying and the final transformation huge.
