We just bought a house which was built in 1995. The Kitchen cabinets are of course oak stained wood veneer. Can I just paint over them? Is there any prep work I need to do?

Just about anything can be painted and it's an exciting and inexpensive transformation. In a nutshell, here's the painting process 1) remove all doors and hardware 2) fill holes with wood putty 3) sand the doors to remove varnish 4) prime 5) paint 6) let dry, rehang and enjoy!
I recommend consulting with the paint professionals at the paint store to get the best primer and paint for your project. Bring a door with you to make it easier. Good luck and have fun!

Any wood veneer cabinet is likely to have a clear coat of polyurethane varnish on it. You will probably have to sand the varnish lightly and apply a good base primer. We would recommend that you take a door off its hinges and bring it with you to a trusted paint supply store. They will point you to the right products. Good luck!
